FOOD LOSS AND WASTE

We believe that reducing food loss is a critical step towards sustainable food systems. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), approximately one-third of all food produced globally is lost or wasted each year. Food loss not only contributes to greenhouse gas emissions but also represents a waste of natural resources such as water, land, and energy used in production, processing, and distribution. At Reco, we are continually innovating to address this challenge.

Our Approach

AT FARM
Farmer training and support

In Uganda, a significant amount of food is lost before it reaches consumers, primarily due to inadequate post-harvest handling practices. To address this issue, we provide comprehensive training programs to farmers on sustainable farming practices. Our training covers not only techniques to improve productivity but also effective post-harvest handling and storage methods.

By equipping farmers with these skills, we help them reduce losses both before and after harvest. Our regional bulking centers play a crucial role in this effort by providing optimal storage facilities for produce. Farmers who utilize these facilities also receive additional training on post-harvest handling techniques, further reducing losses.

AT PROCESSING

The implementation of our mobile lab has significantly enhanced our quality control processes and waste management strategies. By conducting real-time testing in the field, we can swiftly evaluate the quality of produce before it undergoes transportation to our processing facility. This proactive measure has significantly reduced the volume of waste generated at our facility by preventing the transport of produce that does not meet our quality requirements

Moreover, our mobile lab facilitates immediate feedback to farmers regarding the acceptability of their produce. his feedback loop empowers farmers to make timely adjustments to their farming practices or explore alternative market options.

This approach has  helped us cultivate a transparent, trusting, and mutually beneficial relationships with our farmers

AT RETAIL

Value addition is a crucial strategy for reducing food loss and increasing the economic value of agricultural produce by extending its shelf life. Our dedicated R&D team is continuously innovating to develop new value-added products that utilize a diverse range of produce from across the country.

Through this approach, we not only reduce food waste but also expand our product range, catering to diverse consumer preferences. By opening up new markets for these innovative products, we create opportunities for increased income for farmers and contribute to the overall growth of the agricultural sector

Additionally, we are committed to sustainability by exploring innovative ways to utilize waste as an alternative fuel source.
